From space.com http://www.space.com/19044-alien-earth-exoplanets-2013.html

I find the first paragraph particularly interesting.

The first truly Earth-like alien planet is likely to be spotted next year, an epic discovery that would cause humanity to reassess its place in the universe.

While astronomers have found a number of exoplanets (http://www.space.com/17738-exoplanets.html) over the last few years that share one or two key traits with our own world — such as size or inferred surface temperature — they have yet to bag a bona fide "alien Earth." But that should change in 2013, scientists say.

I wonder if they already know where this planet is.

I wouldn't be at all surprised as it can take several months to fully analyze the data they receive. This particular statement seems to confirm that they have a likely candidate but that they need to complete the analysis before making a truly extraordinary announcement.

Stay tuned....!!!

Things are picking up speed, now.

What intrigues me is this first sentence, “The first truly Earth-like alien planet is likely to be spotted next year, an epic discovery that would cause humanity to reassess its place in the universe.” Finding water – or even microscopic life – might cause us to reassess Earth’s place in the universe, but not humanity’s. Many people, reading that in a newspaper, would just keep going to the last page to find out if their favorite sports team won.

However, can our large telescopes, which see distant stars and galaxies, peer at objects closer to us? Probably many of you have seen the beautiful pictures of the Earth at night, those photos they are calling the “Black Marble”. http://mashable.com/2012/12/11/black-marble-interactive/ Can the large telescopes pick up something like that? Can they see the lights of a thriving civilization on another planet? Now that would cause humanity to reassess its place in the universe.

I bet they found exactly earth like planet but they are kind of slow with releasing info

I agree. Someone was saying just a few days ago that in spite of all the mockery of conspiracy theories, the World's astronomers do cooperate and do heed "suggestions" that they not report some things right away.

I feel like it is first smart thing i've written on this forum haha
btw they found 400 planets which could inhabit life. there are high chances that at leas one of them is very similar to earth

Just a couple of years back they were saying that maybe they would find "one or two" planets.
