Here is a little piece of music history. Rick Nelson and James Burton jamming way back in 1958.

Notice the guitars. Rick Nelson is playing what must be a Gibson Hummingbird and James Burton is playing Rick's Rickenbacker Jumbo (I have no idea what the model was back then but they were top of the line.) Rick Nelson's family had a popular TV show and this scene is from the show. James Burton did actually live at their house. Those were great times...

Another classic Marx Bros. performance piece
This time Chico plays the piano with an apple (no, not an iPad).
After a brief 30 sec. intro (where Harpo nearly strangles a poor lady!), it took me awhile to recognize the song; "Listen to The Mockingbird".
One of three tunes I recall being used by the the Three Stooges as a theme song.
For comedy, Chico sure used a nice Piano. I think that is a $teinway or possibly a Bo$endorfer, with a beautifully carved lecturn and Louie XV style legs.

Only a 5 minute rendition? I remember the song as something closer to 10minutes. Great tune. :)

The first vid I put up is a 9 minute + that Mark Farner does in concert. The Original from the concert in 71' is short, I was surprised too.

A little side note:

Grand Funk Railroad will forever be linked to Led Zepplin. Here is a reprint of the story.

"Actually Grand Funk opened for Zeppelin while their second album was released, played with them at Detroit's Olympia Stadium and a riot broke out because the band's set was too short. The riot caused the concert to be cancelled and Zeppelin never performed that night. Grand Funk was kicked off the tour but headlined their own immediatly after. So basically Grand Funk blew Zeppelin off the stage."

ELP.....great memories. Saw them in concert twice. Great shows. Keith playing the moog. Greg on Guitar or base, and Carl was/is a great drummer.

When they came to our town back in the 70s, Carl's drum set spun like a record on a turntable, and the four speaker stacks setup in the arena made for some spectacular quadraphonic audio effects. Very cool stuff.

Damn The Machine, "Humans" (lyrics)

And here we stand in the middle of doubt
The gods know well we cheated
United worlds will race their arms
The humans we will follow

In walks him with a grin of sin
To watch these crowds roar higher
To bend and break me of all will
The crowd was screaming for more

When the day turns to fear
The chaos will appear
May the final salvation be near
Let the hate pave the way
For the humans today
They will find you and break you down!

And here we sit in the middle of it
The gods know well we cheated
United worlds will race their arms
The humans, we will follow

And the day turns to fear
The chaos will appear
May the final salvation be near
Let the hate pave the way
For the humans today
They will find you and break you down!

When anger joins the race
With the human disgrace
May the final salvation be near

Let the hate pave the way
For the humans today
They will find you and break you down!

If you have never seen George Strait work an audience, well, it is a thing of beauty. He can get them applauding him for smiling or adjusting his hat. I meant the music of the Swing Era which began in the late 1930s persisted right into the 1950s and was still going strong when Rock and Roll emerged. The Chordettes, Jo Stafford, Sinatra were all of that older era. Here another prime example of the highly developed tail end of their music. This song stayed on the charts and on the radio for years:

LYRICS:

Devil with the blue dress, blue dress, blue dress Devil with the blue dress on
Devil with the blue dress, blue dress, blue dress Devil with the blue dress on

Fee, fee, fi, fi, fo-fo, fum Look at Molly now, here she comes
Wearin' her wig hat and shades to match
She's got high-heel sneakers and an alligator hat
Wearin' her pearls and her diamond rings
She's got bracelets on her fingers, now, and everything

Devil with the blue dress, blue dress, blue dress Devil with the blue dress on
Devil with the blue dress, blue dress, blue dress Devil with the blue dress on

Wearin' her perfume, Channel No. 5 Got to be the finest thing alive
She walks real cool, catches everybody's eye Cats are too nervous, they can't say Hi
Not too skinny, she's not too fat She's a real humdinger and I like 'em like that

Devil with the blue dress, blue dress, blue dress Devil with the blue dress on
Devil with the blue dress, blue dress, blue dress Devil with the blue dress on

Good golly, Miss Molly You sure like to ball
Good golly, Miss Molly You sure like to ball
While you're rocking and you're rolling Can't you hear your mama callin

From the early, early mornin' 'til the early, early night
See Miss Molly rockin' at the House of Blue Lights
Good golly, Miss Molly You sure like to ballin
Well you better take it easy Hear your mama callin

Lyrics...Love is the Answer:

Name your price
A ticket to paradise
I can't stay here any more
And I've looked high and low
I've been from shore, to shore, to shore
If there's a short cut I'd have found it
But there is no easy way around it

Light of the world, shine on me
Love is the answer
Shine on us all
Set us free
Love is the answer

Who knows why
Someday we all must die
We're all homeless boys and girls
And we are never heard
It's such a lonely, lonely, lonely world
People turn their heads
And walk on by
Tell me is it worth just another try

Light of the world, shine on me
Love is the answer
Shine on us all
Set us free
Love is the answer

Tell me, are we alive
Or just a dying planet
(What are the chances)

Ask the man in your heart
For the answer

And when you feel afraid
(Love one another)
When you've lost your way
(Love one another)
And when you're all alone
(Love one another)
And when you're far from home
(Love one another)
And when you're down and out
(Love one another)
And when your hopes run out
(Love one another)
And when you need a friend
(Love one another)
And when you're near the end
(Love)
(We've got to love)
(We've got to love one another)

Light of the world, shine on me
Love is the answer
Shine on us all
Set us free
Love is the answer

Light of the world, shine on me
Love is the answer

Silent Running, Mike and the Mechanics

Take your children and yourself and hide out in the cellar.
By now the fighting will be close at hand.
Don't believe the church and state and everything they tell you.
Believe in me I'm with the high command.
Can you hear me
can you hear me running?
Can you heal me running
can you hear me calling you?
Can you heal me
can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running
can you hear me calling you?
There's a gun and amnunition just inside the doorway;
Use it only in emergency.
Better you should pray to God the father and the spirit.
Will guide you and protect you from up here.
Can you hear me
can you hear me running?
Show allegiance to the flag whatever flag they offer.
Never hint at what you really feel.
Teach the children quietly for some day sons and daughters.
Will rise up and fight where we stood still.
Can you hear me
can you hear me running? . . .
Can you hear me
can you hear me running?
Can you heal me running
can you hear me calling you?
Can you hear me running
can you hear me calling you?
Can you hear me hear me calling you?
Can you hear me running hear me running babe!
Can you hear me running hear me running!
Calling you calling you!

Enter Sandman By Metallica

Say your prayers little one
Don't forget my son
To include everyone

I tuck you in, warm within
Keep you free from sin
'Til the sandman he comes

Sleep with one eye open
Gripping your pillow tight

Exit light
Enter night
Take my hand
We're off to never-never land

Something's wrong, shut the light
Heavy thoughts tonight
And they aren't of Snow White

Dreams of war, dreams of liars
Dreams of dragon's fire
And of things that will bite, yeah

Sleep with one eye open
Gripping your pillow tight

Exit light
Enter night
Take my hand
We're off to never-never land

Now I lay me down to sleep
Now I lay me down to sleep
Pray the lord my soul to keep
Pray the lord my soul to keep

If I die before I wake
If I die before I wake
Pray the lord my soul to take
Pray the lord my soul to take

Hush little baby don't say a word
And never mind that noise you heard
It's just the beasts under your bed
In your closet in your head

Exit light
Enter night
Grain of sand

Exit light
Enter night
Take my hand
We're off to never-never land

Boo! Yeah yeah!

We're off to never-never land
Take my hand
We're off to never-never land
Take my hand

We're off to never-never land
We're off to never-never land
We're off to never-never land

This for Lee. Rock-a-Billy and Rock n Roll had found each other and both of them had found good production values in decent studios. This song comes alive with the first guitar break. When this recording was introduced nobody had heard anything quite like it before for the simple reason that James Burton was making it up on the fly. Guitar players bought the record, memorized every note and went down to the music store to find out what a Fender Telecaster was going to cost them.

Wow! We are all over the place. Well, OK, then. In keeping with that spirit, here is something from an unexpected place and band--who for some reason made two hit records that people still love. It is also "Our Song" --the one that makes me and Miss August smile. Top Gear calls it one of the Greatest Driving Songs ever made. It is probably responsible for many speeding tickets. To me it will always be late night 90 mile trips home before cell phones and ten more miles an hour when this one came on. Crank up the stereo and step on the gas!

Jimi Hendrex "Along The Watch" written by Bob Dylan

"There must be some way out of here" said the joker to the thief

"There's too much confusion", I can't get no relief

Businessmen, they drink my wine, plowmen dig my earth

None of them along the line know what any of it is worth.

"No reason to get excited", the thief he kindly spoke.
"There are many here among us who feel that life is but a joke.
But you and I, we've been through that, and this is not our fate.
So let us not talk falsely now, the hour is getting late".

All along the watchtower, princes kept the view

While all the women came and went, barefoot servants, too.

Outside in the distance a wildcat did growl

Two riders were approaching, the wind began to howl.

calikid,

After that Traveling Wilburys post you did, I ended up booking marking a number of their videos.

Traveling Wilburys, "End Of The Line".

Well it's all right
Riding around in the breeze
Well it's all right
If you live the life you please
Well it's all right
Doing the best you can
Well it's all right
As long as you lend a hand

You can sit around and wait for the phone to ring
(at the end of the line)
Waiting for someone to tell you everything
(at the end of the line)
Sit around and wonder what tomorrow'll bring
(at the end of the line)
Maybe a diamond ring

Well it's all right
Even if they say you're wrong
Well it's all right
Sometimes you gotta be strong
Well it's all right
As long as you got someone to lay with
Well it's all right
Every day is judgment day

Maybe somewhere down the road a ways
(at the end of the line)
You'll think of me and wonder where i am these days
(at the end of the line)
Maybe somewhere down the road when somebody plays
(at the end of the line)
Purple Haze

Well it's all right
Even when push comes to shove
Well it's all right
If you got someone to love
Well it's all right
Everything will work out fine
Well it's all right
We're going to the end of the line

Don't have to be ashamed of the car I drive
(at the end of the line)
I'm just glad to be here happy to be alive
(at the end of the line)
And it don't matter if you're by my side
(at the end of the line)
I'm satisfied

Well it's all right
Even if you're old and gray
Well it's all right
You still got something to say
Well it's all right
Remember live and let live
Well it's all right
The best you can do is forgive
Well it's all right
Riding around on the breeze
Well it's all right
If you live the life you please
Well it's all right
Even if the sun don't shine
Well it's all right
We're going to the end of the line

Yes, a ton of talent came together with that group.
So many egos, and they still managed harmony.

It was especially nice to see George Harrison on guitar/vocals...... while he was still with us.

I like to think that Roy Orbison got some enjoyment and some renewed appreciation from his time with The Traveling Wilburys. He had about 25 years of tragedy and disappointment before that.
He was an incredible talent. Elvis said Roy Orbison had the best voice around. This is a remake of his own solo hit recording with K. D. Lang, another great voice.
