Sadly until some breakthrough in propulsion systems is discovered, our chemical rockets just won't cover the lightyears distances we would need to travel.

Where is Scotty's warp drive when we really need it!

The search for aliens is back on--and newly confirmed Earthy-ish planet Kepler 22-b (http://www.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-57336863-1/kepler-22-b-nasa-confirms-another-earth/) is among the top targets.


SETI's Allen Telescope Array (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allen_Telescope_Array) (ATA) is once again searching for extra-terrestrial life after spending several months in hibernation. The array "listens" across a broad range of frequencies for any radio transmissions from, well, somewhere else.
The SETI Institute says (http://www.seti.org/node/905) the restart of the search is thanks to funding raised via the Web--the SETIStars (https://setistars.org/donations/new) program has raised more than $200,000 in online donations--as well as additional funds from the U.S. Air Force.
The announcement comes as NASA also announced this week that its Kepler mission had confirmed the first Earth-like planet in a habitable zone where liquid water and life might exist. The planet, dubbed Kepler 22-b, is 600 light years away and roughly 2.5 times the size of Earth. Scientists believe surface temperatures to be comfortably around 70 degrees (Fahrenheit).
The Air Force will be conducting a formal assessment of the ATA's utility for "Space Situational Awareness," according to the SETI Institute (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SETI_Institute). One of SETI (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SETI)'s first tasks after rebooting will be resuming exploration of thousands of planet "candidates" identified by NASA's Kepler space telescope, including 22-b.

I did see that article. Very interesting.
Wonder what strings are attached to the USAF funds?

Maybe we can BEAM a wave towards Kepler-22b and see if their SETI has it's ears on.... :biggrin2:

I noticed that too. Interesting that the USAF would be interested in rebooting the program.

I noticed that too. Interesting that the USAF would be interested in rebooting the program.

Years ago, I had the SETI at home monitor set up on my PC searching for signals.

Yes we do....
IMAGINE ALL the money that has been spent on war that could have gone to Space Exploration....

When I was watching the Mercury, Gemini, and the Apollo missions as a child I really thought we would be in space by this time.
I figured when I was 'old' I would be in space.
(well I was a kid then and anything after the year 2000 seemed a long ways away and I would be OLD...:biggrin2:)

I am willing to bet a lot of us back then thought we would be on Mars by now with colonies and so forth...
The Moon would have been 'old news' by this time.

There are perhaps 150 billion planets in the galaxy. We're not going to visit them by tying firecrackers on our asses and blasting off into near space -no matter how much of our silly scrip we invest in the task. What is required is a new understanding of temporal reality upon which to found a new physics. Such a breakout requires imagination, not a trivial will based on dollars.

Very interesting that the Air Force would be contributing funding to SETI. The government seemed to be washing its hands of the whole project. But then again, this wouldn't be the first project to go from public funding into the "black".

SETI's scattergun approach has heretofore been useles as tits on the proverbial boar. Now that it has promising areas upon which to focus it may just bear fruit.

Seti always makes me think of "Contact". I wonder if they had any idea how inadequate the search was when they first set it up? In retrospect its value may have been more in PR than in practical terms. They showed that we could start someplace and do better as we learned more. I like that.

As for the book "Contact" the Jackrabbits out in the desert actually do sit in a long row beside the road and watch the cars going by on some hot summer nights. Very strange to see.

Firecracker technology would be useful in exploring and even colonizing planets and moons within our solar system but anything else for deep exploration would be total nonsense due to enormous distances involved. Let us assume we do manage to travel FTL, even many times faster, we would then have another obstacle to overcome which would be causation.

I do agree with you 100% that the only way, with our present knowledge, to travel the great distances involved and to understand life out there would be by the temporal reality you suggest.

Now on the other hand within the present framework of our scientific communities most knowledge out there is compartmentalized and it would take some effort to bring this knowledge together for a common cause. To use an example would be in the study of molecular relocation which is now being formulated at major universities and is not confined by distance. This may take us into the spooky world of quantum physics but it is something that might be attainable in the future for deep space exploration.
