With all the rumblings of a war with Syria going on, why would a radio station do a promo about aliens taking over the station? Did they just assume that nobody believes in this stuff? Or, did someone want to find out if people would believe it?

‘Alien’ Marketing Promotion Scares Residents In Ala. CommunityAugust 30, 2013 9:04 AM
TUSCUMBIA, Ala. (AP) — A gimmicky promotion about an alien takeover at a radio station wound up scaring some residents of a north Alabama community.
Star 94.9 is changing formats in Tuscumbia, so it used a marketing ploy in which aliens take over the station to figure out what type of music appeals to humans.
But the promotion apparently scared some people.
The TimesDaily reports that concerned parents and students called police and schools, and the station says it received phone calls, too.

Thanks for the links, Fore.. It almost sounds like they were trying to make an apology in the Sound Cloud link you posted. There are several more of those promos on the Star 94 Sound cloud page. https://soundcloud.com/shoals-star

To me, this one is the strangest. It is 10 minutes of mostly meditative sounds of chirping birds and running water. http://snd.sc/148P1th
The one with the meditation sounds is called, "The Commander Launches His New Format"

BTW, this October 30 is the 75th Anniversary of the Orson Welles broadcast of War of the Worlds

That region is not known for it's intellectual development. They once tried to legally set the value of pi at 3, no decimals, just 3.

It looks like a really nice town to me http://cityoftuscumbia.org/

If anyone there has a low (business) IQ, it might be the station managers. If they had used the whole 10 minutes of one of those promos, they would have been using up a lot of air time. That is air time that could have been used for advertising to make money for the station. Instead, the air time was used for a promo with chirping birds and running water. That does not make sense to me from a business point of view.

The people who listened that day were probably regular listeners and did not expect to hear what was on the radio at the moment. War of the Worlds used the same format. There would be regular, recognizable music and then Orson Welles would break in with a news bulletin. That was repeated throughout the first half of the program. In this Star 94 promo, instead of a news bulletin, it was 10 minutes of alien chatter.

Wonder what the FCC thinks about this?
While people say "no such thing as bad publicity" it could cost the radio station their broadcasting license!
