Doctors at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center are trying a new procedure where patients with life threatening injuries will be kept in a state of suspended animation. Patients' bodies will be cooled using saline so that the body's functions will be slowed. Damage that occurs when there is not enough oxygen flow will occur less rapidly as a result. Similar to inducing a coma in the brain, the new procedure will be used for victims that have suffered a large loss of blood or loss of oxygen delivery. RT's Lindsay France speaks with Dr. Sujatha Reddy about this groundbreaking procedure.
