Just seen this on Facebook a short ago. They finally posted a video of the failed landing on the platform at sea today. You can tell it was a soft landing but a leg didn't lock and it fell over Blowing to pieces... Man, BOOM... https://www.instagram.com/p/BAqp2Vpl8e6/?taken-by=spacex

Tragic... I think I would call that a successful landing. After it landed, it fell over. Like a plane landing on a runway, and when it came to a stop, the landing gear caved in and it fell over on a wing.

To me, that gear appears to turn sideways. I wonder if it overheated and was soft and it just buckled. The heat from slowing down and landing must be massively intense. Perhaps putting some heat shrouds on the undersides of the landing gear might fix that?

As soon as a rocket goes up, the problem of stability has to be dealt with. When coming down the various elements that create stability going up, are being shut down. Unless the rocket is in a narrow cone of stability, shutting down the means to stabilize it while it still needs stability, is leaving no ability to correct the rocket's vertical orientation if it deviates outside of that cone of stability on landing. There needs to be a short period where rockets near the top of the rocket can be used to bring the rocket back into being within this cone of stability as the steering from below goes away.

A half-hour after launch, SpaceX reported that the rocket booster descended to the ship on target, but that one of its four landing legs failed to lock into place as it touched down amid choppy seas.

As a result, the booster tipped over onto the deck and blew up, as shown in a dramatic Instagram video posted by Musk. He said the root cause of the failure might have been “ice buildup due to condensation from heavy fog at liftoff.”

Well I'm sure that landing gear ended up costing them a lot more than expected.
