Dear colleagues.

Few days ago, I was archiving locally on my hard drive available material from the official National Geographic site for the new TV series “Chasing UFOs” with James Fox (his latest project). So I was able to see all clips/teasers released so far and to download all photos.

Today I also watched latest Open Minds episode “Spacing Out” where James Fox is interviewed about the show. It is available here:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=NG21KoDHDP4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NG21KoDHDP4)

…where James at the 28.20 minute mark states this:

“There are some interesting discoveries at the actual crash site in Roswell , New Mexico . I don’t know if I am in liberty to reveal . . It was a find at a crash site with the metal detector.”

The picture of the find is available at the official NGC site here:

The find in question is a military button. After some research and comparing other buttons that are on ebay I was able to find this info.

It is an US Air Force button (or should we say United States Army Air Forces - it depends based on the exact dating).
It was manufactured by Waterbury Button Co.

On Ebay I was able to find same buttons with these descriptions. For example this seller states:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-US-Air-Force-Military-Silvertone-Metal-Button-Old-Pattern-Waterbury-1-/330752197669#vi-desc
„For your consideration is a vintage military metal button!!! Named the Eagle on Crest, this is the old pattern (#15844) & was used by the US Air Force before 1941“

This one has a very good pictures of front and back:

Also here is another picture of military buttons titled: “4 1940's Waterbury Air Force Military Buttons” where the same model is presented:
http://www.etsy.com/listing/80293905/4-1940s-waterbury-air-force-military?ref=sr_gallery_9&ga_includes%5B%5D=materials&ga_search_query=vintage+air+force+buttons&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery

Some basic info about buttons and dating:
http://voices.yahoo.com/identifying-military-buttons-3354658.html

It seems there could be some indications that dating could be around 1940s, however that is not completely conclusive as it depends how long the same logo has been used in later years. Does anyone know someone who has a good knowledge of history of uniform insignia that could share more lights on the possible manufacturing usage of the button?

More data will be probably presented in the episode anyway. But, now you are informed to know what to expect soon J

Episode is scheduled to be broadcast at July 13, 2012 titled “UFO Landing Zone” – Here is the trailer:

Official intro –

UFO Landing Zone?
FRI JUL 13 10P et/pt
For decades, the skies above the desert sands of Roswell , N.M. , have been home to thousands of reports of unidentified flying objects. But one particular home video has the Chasing UFO's team in hot pursuit of the truth.

If anyone will have any additional insights of the possible dating of the button, please share it on the list.

Best Wishes.

PS – Stay tuned for my new report in the next few days that I am preparing. After few years of hard search within community of other archivists, I was finally successful in locating Coast to Coast original episode aired on March 13, 1997 (night of the “Phoenix Lights”). The copy is obtained few days ago with many other additional rare shows from 1990s, and now they safely reside in my archives.
