Head of UK Air Traffic Control Richard Deakin is responsible for making sure over 6,000 flights move safely through the airspace every day.

During an interview with the Today programme's Simon Jack, he was pressed about whether his staff encounter unidentified flying objects.

Haha! I bet he's going to regret he ever said that! Thanks for sharing!

Transcript of the audio for those of you unable to play the clip outside the UK

Simon Japes -Presenter: Very quickly my children asked me to ask you this question; 'Have you or anyone of your staff ever been unable to explain a flying object?'
(Laughter from presenter and other guests)
Male guest:Excellent
Female guest: Best question
Another Presenter (possibly John Humpries): Is that a question you've put in the mouth's of your children?
Simon Japes: Is there a.. Is there a procedure? Come on...
Richard Deakin: Well occasionally there are objects which I identify that don't conform to normal traffic patterns but not just from the UK point of view but from around the world. It's not something that occupies a huge amount of my time.. though
Female guest (shocked): That's a yes
Male guest: Come on..How many?
Richard Deakin: That is a yes..typically around of a month some along that those lines..
Simon Japes: One a month! The skies are buzzing with UFOs. Ric hard Deakin thank you very much.

I wonder whose time is occupied looking at those traces. These guys have to be well briefed ET craft show up on radar pretty often.

This morning another presenter James Naughtie asked Nick Pope about what Mr Deakin said yesterday.

He downplays it a little too much for my liking, but does admit some cases were very hard to dismiss.
