"Behind the legal fight over NSA's "Stellar Wind" surveillance

by Julian Sanchez

The most recent edition of Newsweek confirms a few long-held suspicions about the National Security Agency's controversial post-9/11 surveillance activities—such as the identity of the Justice Department lawyer who first tipped off The New York Times about the administration's warrantless wiretapping and the basis for the internal showdown that led to a now-infamous face-off at the attorney general's hospital bed. It also provides a few new revelations—including the classified name of the program: "Stellar Wind."

In a lengthy profile in the magazine's December 22 issue, Michael Isikoff names Thomas M. Tamm, formerly an attorney with the Justice Department's Office of Intelligence Policy and Review, as the ur-source of the earthshattering New York Times story that first revealed the existence of a secret program of warrantless surveillance authorized by the president in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

This is not the first time Tamm has been named as a potential source of reporting on the NSA program. Indeed, Isikoff himself first did so over a year ago, in a Newsweek story describing an FBI raid on Tamm's home. It is, however, the first time that Tamm himself has spoken publicly about his role in the leaks, or discussed his reasons for coming forward."

U.S. mining data from 9 leading Internet firms; companies deny knowledge

By Barton Gellman and Laura Poitras, Published: June 6 E-mail the writer

The National Security Agency and the FBI are tapping directly into the central servers of nine leading U.S. Internet companies, extracting audio and video chats, photographs, e-mails, documents, and connection logs that enable analysts to track foreign targets, according to a top-secret document obtained by The Washington Post.

The program, code-named PRISM, has not been made public until now. It may be the first of its kind. The NSA prides itself on stealing secrets and breaking codes, and it is accustomed to corporate partnerships that help it divert data traffic or sidestep barriers. But there has never been a Google or Facebook before, and it is unlikely that there are richer troves of valuable intelligence than the ones in Silicon Valley.

National Security Agency secretly collected phone records of millions of Verizon customers.

Equally unusual is the way the NSA extracts what it wants, according to the document: “Collection directly from the servers of these U.S. Service Providers: Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, Facebook, PalTalk, AOL, Skype, YouTube, Apple.”

PRISM was launched from the ashes of President George W. Bush’s secret program of warrantless domestic surveillance in 2007, after news media disclosures, lawsuits and the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court forced the president to look for new authority......

PRISM is only the one of the latest bell and whistle added to the NSA's tools dedicated to learning whatever it wants to find out. The Echelon program goes way back and probably is rooted to the very start of the NSA. Echelon is a program where the spy agencies of the USA, UK and Australia get around each others laws about not spying on their own people and spy on the other nations in the program and then pass the desired portions, so no direct link exists between the spying and learning of private information. This legalistic trick of avoiding directly spying on one's own people still does that very thing. Exactly who benefits from such spying is really the question. While the security of the country could be enhanced by such spying, it also opens up the likelihood that such information could be used for corrupt reasons as well.

When 60 Minutes ran a story on the program many years ago it was revealed that the USA was spying on the divorced Princess Diana Spencer and then passing along the information to the UK for whatever reason they were looking for this information. So even when the NSA is not spying on US citizens, it has the UK and Australians doing it for them.

Hi Mjc
I'm no expert. I knew the Americans had a base in Cornwall for snooping on all UK stuff but had no idea it worked both ways.
Someone posted an interview here on Outpost and it had someone mentioning how all the internet and calls, at a major US telecoms giant were ordered, i think after 911, to go through a 'blue room' who was that was it Binney?
Same guy said they could listen in on your mobile even when it was turned off.

You need to read the transcript of the 60 Minuets piece. Read into the piece all we have learned since. In the link I'm providing also not that there are additional links to more of the story. Also note that the ECHELON Program in the 60 Minutes report is from 2000, before the 9/11 attacks and before Bush, but what should be the surprise there, the NSA began in 1948 to spy on the World, and it's existence was itself on the deepest secrets until that existence was itself leaked.

http://cryptome.org/echelon-60min.ht...elon-60min.htm This link brings one to the transcript of the "60 Minutes" report from the year 2000 about ECHELON. This link also has other links and all told they bring further links to a real bounty of information on just what ECHELON involves. Give what we know of UFOs, the code word of the program (now that it has been compromised) has likely been changed. But once one know all this, really WHAT is the surprise. The press has had their heads buried in the sand since this first MSM exposure in 2000, and little if anything has been said since. Could it be that the ownership of the media is intimidated, or even beholden to NOT exposing the NSAs secrets?

Watched that Fore daresay we are all probably on it.

Couple of days ago RussianTimes interviewed Binney about the recent leaks.
He said 'its setting up the totalitarian state' PRISM is not an extension of his STELLAR WIND but a new thing takes all data everything.

He mentions again a signal splitter on AT&T fibre cable. And how probably the same with all the www and telephone exchanges.
Have we been set up here this is all ET technology (fibre optics and the transistor). Was this foreseen?
Scary thought for the day.

Imagine Stalin or Hilter or another dictator with this kind of power. 'Thought police' they will virtually know what you are going to do before you do it.
Civil uprisings and rebellion have very often brought progressive social change. Our ancestors have fought two world wars to preserve our freedoms, millions died, now in the name of three or is it four major terrorist attacks they are stolen away.
A far better way to stop terrorism would be to stop invading other countries under false pretenses and to stop selling other countries weapons and instead help them crawl out of poverty and ignorance. Without a decent educated population how can we ever hope to solve the massive problems facing the world like peak oil, water shortages and over population. Rant over.

Split the difference

The US National Security Agency's Prism program seems to be lifting personal data from the internet. How?

Internet giants including Google and Facebook strongly deny that the NSA has direct access to its servers. There is another way, however. A slide from an internal NSA Powerpoint presentation suggests the agency is siphoning directly from fibre-optic cables. To do this, it probably uses "splitters", which split the light beam.

Recent research by Andrew Clement at the University of Toronto, Canada, shows that 99 per cent of US internet traffic goes through one of just 18 cities. So if the NSA installed splitters at a few strategic points "it could intercept a large proportion of internet traffic", Clement says.

A glass prism is of course a beam splitter so it's all in the name.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PRISM_(surveillance_program)

"Notes[edit]

1.^ Multiple technology writers have asserted that the term "PRISM" refers to the computer systems tool that is used to gather intelligence rather than to the surveillance program itself, consistent with statements from US Government sources.[4][5] Marc Ambinder, the co-author of a forthcoming book on national security and secrecy, described PRISM as "a kick-ass GUI that allows an analyst to look at, collate, monitor, and cross-check different data types provided to the NSA from internet companies located inside the United States."[6] Investigative reporter Kurt Eichenwald also described PRISM as "government computer system", adding that PRISM is "not a program and not a secret, and anyone who says it is should not be trusted because they don't know what they're talking about"[7] Political blogger Kevin Drum posted a description of PRISM software from the army field manual and noted functional similarities. [4]"

COMMENT.......This Wikipedia link has a ton of other resources with links that provide a whole boat load of interesting things to ponder. There is far more here than has been leaked in this latest episode. On the news the other day another code name program was also cited, these guys have been doing a lot of work which might bother someone who thought they could live an anonymous life.

Edward Snowden: Solar-Flare ‘Killshot’ Cataclysm Imminent
By Oliver Wilis, on July 23rd, 2013

1043

MOSCOW, Russia – Edward Snowden, hacker-fugitive and former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor, revealed Tuesday that a series of solar flares is set to occur in September, killing hundreds of millions of people. Documents provided by Snowden prove that, as of 14 years ago, Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) remote viewers knew that the event was inevitable. Ever since, the world’s governments have quietly been trying to prepare for the sweeping global famine to result.

Speaking from his room at Sheremetyevo Airport’s Hotel Novotel, Snowden revealed that government preparations for September’s catastrophic solar flares have been “to only limited avail.” The flares’ results, he said, are known casually throughout the global intelligence community as “the killshot.”

Remote viewers employed by the CIA’s Project Stargate use their ability to perceive geographically and chronologically distant events to protect America. Since 1999 they have known about the solar-flare event but have been threatened into silence by enforcers on the secret government’s payroll.

As a part of hiring Snowden as a contractor, the NSA granted the 30-year-old access to all communications on earth. Now he has provided The Internet Chronicle with top-secret Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) documents outlining just how terrible the solar flares’ results will be. In just two months, “the killshot” is set to disable all electronic food and water delivery systems.

Ever since the late 20th century, hundreds of millions of people have begun to rely on technological automation to enable their very lives. Solar flares release electromagnetic pulses, hazardous to electronic circuits. The smallest electronic circuits, such as those in computers’ central processing units, will be the most vulnerable.

Snowden said FEMA and the National Disaster Reduction Center of China have been taking steps for 14 years in light of the findings of Project Stargate. FEMA’s own documents, provided by Snowden, lay out how the organization plans to round up tens of millions of the poorest Americans for housing at secure locations “to better facilitate feeding and provision of consumer goods.”

Snowden, for years a CIA contractor, released testimonials from hundreds of remote viewers. Many of those remote viewers are still on the payroll of the governments of the United States and the Russian Federation. Those testimonials, though written independently by the analysts, are comprised of 4,472 pages, every single one of which, alarmingly, evince Snowden’s account.

“The massive electromagnetic pulse from the solar flares, or ‘the killshot,’ will shutter most of the world’s electrical systems,” said Snowden. “The Americans whose lives are most at risk are the elderly and the infirmed, those who depend on technology to enable their receiving home care or life-sustaining medical treatment.”

Throughout the 1970s and the 1990s, Russia and the United States were desperate to track and monitor the construction and maintenance of each other’s nuclear silos. The nations’ governments openly admitted having poured billions of dollars into the training of elite teams of remote viewers. With their powers, the remote viewers were able to deter nuclear launches and, ultimately, bring an end to the Cold War. In the mid-’90s, the CIA simply pretended to close its remote-viewing program, so that it could operate more effectively.

Snowden said he hopes that his coming forward will allow Project Stargate’s participants to be able to live normal, open lives again, “instead of as circus animals, instead of as freaks.” He added, “[Significant others of Project Stargate employees] have to get Q clearances just to cohabitate with, without even marrying, their loved ones. That’s tantamount to slavery.”

Humanity is about to pay a most dire price for its technological dependence. That price, said Snowden, proved a leading factor in his decision to come forward to the press – about both the global Holocaust to ensue, as well as NSA analysts’ power, on the slightest whim, to listen to the phone calls of any person on earth.

Snowden said, with regard to CIA remote viewers, “I have seen too many brave whistleblowers become subjects of smear and ridicule for using their talents to expose the truth.” Added Snowden, bitterly, “Well, we’ll see who’s Mr. Chuckles when ‘the killshot’ goes down.”

WikiLeaks attorneys; and Anatoly Kucherena, Snowden’s own counsel, together produced a video calling for calm and global preparedness. Monday, Snowden sent the video, below, to the Russian Federal Migration Service as part of his call for asylum.

OK children, it looks like this one is a lie. There is no source information. Only one blogger who has made the claim and dozens upon dozens who have picked up the story but with not one ounce of true journalistic value. If it pointed to Wikileaks, or another sourcing site, and we could read the actual reports that would be something. But there is nothing. It is garbage to claim something and then turn around and there is nothing to back up what you say. It would be like all UFO reporters saying that they saw something but never having any photographs to back up what they say they saw. Until I start reading reports of remote viewers sessions where they say they see a "killshot", and it is a genuine session report, it is no better than another crappy Ed Dames campfire ghost tale. And when has Ed Dames EVER been right!
