Religion and ufogy

For a few years now I have been trying to understand the relationship, if there is any, between religion and ufogy.

I think like all of us here, there is a reason why we search. Are we searching for alien life / UFO's? no, it is beyond that, it is a search for the truth. We, as humans, want to know where we come from, why we are here and what is life really about in the grandest of schemes. Therefor like everyone else, I search, I study, I think, I repeat.

I am catholic and I attend mass almost weekly. My reasons for going have evolved over time. When I was a kid I went because my mom dragged me. When I was a young adult, I went to mass on Christmas and Easter. As I got married and had children, we felt it was important to belong to a community of great people, even though we did not follow the politics of the church. We go to mass because it was a way to spend a good 90 minutes together with your immediate family, sing, visit, and just feel good about yourself when you left.

Along side of all that, I would search for my own meaning of life, this search lead me to think about ghosts, angles, and UFOs.

What I am about to share are the conclusions as of today on what I believe. which is nothing more than an attempt to understand myself instead of trying to make any claims or proclamations. In other words this is my personal belief, and it is that, very personal.

Like most people I believe in a higher power. I call my higher power God.

Also like most people, I believe we are not alone in our universe. The difference in my beliefs vs. some others is that I also believe this intelligent life has been with mankind since the beginning.

I believe what the bible refers to as the Holy Spirit is really nothing more than a visitor, albeit a very powerful and good visitor, from another galaxy in our universe. Now, I mean no disrespect to the Holy Spirit when I say "nothing more" but what I am implying is even a power greater beyond that ...so far out in fact we cannot even comprehend its existence because we as humans have yet to evolve that far.

I am currently studying the Gospel of Mark...

For me, when I read the bible, if I substitute, everything I know about Ufology, alien abduction, ect.. everytime the bible mentions the Holy Spirit, the stories actually begin to make sense. I am talking logic sense. Scientific sense to a point I can actually say to myself, I can see how that could happen.

I will just give you one example at this time, the story about the birth of Jesus.

Following Joseph and Mary's betrothal in the book of Matthew 1:18, Joseph is troubled because Mary is pregnant. However, in the first of Joseph's three dreams an angel assures him not be afraid to take Mary as his wife, because her child was conceived by the Holy Spirit"

This story, in my opinion is almost identical to stories I have heard from people who claim they have been abducted by some sort of alien presence.

I try to understand that the bible was written to an audience with nowhere the intellect that we currently hold as humans of our generation.
So a question I would ask…. If Jesus was a hybrid alien… would that change a persons view of Jesus?

Mark 13:24
“But in those days after that tribulation
the sun will be darkened,
and the moon will not give its light,
and the stars will be falling from the sky,
and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.

And then they will see ‘the Son of Man coming in the clouds’
with great power and glory,
and then he will send out the angels and
gather elect from the four winds,
from the end of the earth to the end of the sky.

Talks about Jesus descending from the clouds.

So powerful in fact, Michelangelo is so inspired brilliantly in the Sistine Chapel, from one end of the room to the other in the altar wall along with the frescoes on the side walls, in his magnificent “Last Judgment.” In this we see Christ coming in the clouds, gathering the angels and the elect, while casting the condemned to hell. We also see the angels and the elect trying to lift up those struggling toward salvation, while demons try to pull others into damnation. The cross and the scourging pillar are discarded, as Christ has fulfilled the Scriptures in this last day of judgment.

It is a beautiful painting, painted at a time when the concept of aviation was a dream let alone something traveling at the speed of light. So for centuries this is the image we had of Jesus and God, some "old guy" floating on a cloud.

I personally have an easier time believing Jesus came from another part of our universe more than I can believe an old grey breaded man floating in a cloud. But if you think about it, if you were writing the bible, how would you describe to mankind before the knowledge of airflight, ufo’s? you would describe it exactly as they did… ‘the Son of Man coming in the clouds’

Thank you for that BluCottonCandy, that was refreshing and reflects what many of us feel but there seems to be another side to your story and your perceptions may also be answered in this manner…

God is God. If God wants to be an old white haired bearded man in the sky, no problem. If God wants to be an ET across the Universe, well, God has that covered also. You see, God can be whatever God wants to be. God is God. Could the J man be a hybrid? Why not, God is God.

Re-think of Mark 13:24 and then visualize a ‘black hole’. Those angels and ‘Chariots of the Sky’ may make sense after all.

I think rather than trying to think about God in parallel with aliens it may be better to find God from the things that are necessary and accessible first. For example.

Does true objective morality exist? (objective = true whether any minds believe it to be true or not) There is an old Greek Dilemma about the gods called the Euthyprhro dilemma. It basically states 'Is goodness loved by the gods because it is good, or is it good because it is loved by the gods? In other words, why is a god "good'? Put into our present context 'Is goodness loved by aliens because it is good, or is it good because it is loved by the aliens?

How can 'goodness' be grounded in ET's just because they are more technologically developed that us? And if the aliens love goodness because it is good, then what is goodness grounded in?

Where can we ground goodness in such a way as to be meaningful and objective. We can ground it only in God, and only God as defined as a "maximally great being". He himself is the paradigm of goodness in the same way as a ruler is a paradigm of measurement. If objective morality exists, then this being, this maximally great being, must also exist. If he does not exist, then neither does objective morality exist.

So even if Jesus came down and said he was just an alien we must still ask, then where is God because He must exist, because objective morality exists. This is also the case in Cosmogony but it would take a lot more to explain.

Beyond that I don't think Jesus could be a hybrid because he was around all throughout the old testament as 'the angel of the Lord'. (angel means messenger (deeper meaning of this phrase is Word of God) It would also make more sense to come as Apollo not Jesus. Jesus's was prophesied my a small nation to be rejected and killed. Apollo was prophesied to come and bring a new age to man and was part of the religion of the empire of Rome. It would be unreasonable to make contact by impersonating the Jewish Messiah, when you consider the context it just doesn't provide you with an adequate position. The hypotheses wouldn't match the historical or prophetic Messiah.

I think when these beings finally make contact they will cause the great falling away. But there are logical reasons for the existence of God that transcend any deception they can bring. I hope you will talk to your priest about these things, and If I can be of any help, I am available.
