History Channel's new 10 episode Docudrama series premiers TONIGHT Jan 8, 2019, with "The Fuller Dogfight" case file.

    TV Review: ‘Project Blue Book’
    By Caroline Framke

The most surprising thing about “Project Blue Book” is that it took so long to become a TV show in the first place. As it will tell you itself at the top of every episode, History’s new scripted drama is “based on true events,” or at least the recorded instances of possible UFO sightings and the Air Force’s subsequent investigations during the 1950’s and ’60s. Each week, a new case sparks new intrigue, both about the potential of both alien life and a government conspiracy to cover it up. All the while, the Cold War looms ominously, infusing everyone with a deep unease and paranoia they can’t shake no matter how hard they try to stave it all off.

In this way, “Project Blue Book” sets itself up to be a period piece “X Files,” a reliable formula that would be hard to fumble completely. That inspiration extends most obviously to the unlikely pair anchoring the series. Captain Michael Quinn (Michael Malarkey) recruits astrophysicist Dr. Josef Allen Hynek (Aidan Gillen of “Game of Thrones”) to join him in investigating reports of UFO activity around the country, but the gig comes with a huge and omnipresent asterisk.

First episode of Project Blue Book was good.
S1E01 The Fuller Dogfight. Full episode available to view online.
    .
A preview of Episode 2 was just posted up at History Channel's website.
S1E02 The Flatwoods Monster. Due out Jan 15, 2019 at 10pm (PDT)
    .
As a grammar school child, maybe 5th or 6th grade, I recall this magazine cover story. The story was disturbing, as were the rendered drawings. At the time I found the story fascinating. Still do.

    Watched it really enjoyed it.

Seems a little over dramatized, Hynek took years to come to the belief there was something in it.
But so glad they have the Air Force actively covering it up, that for me is the only was to explain how they debunked cases with such non-nonsensical explanations.
I believe certain elements were covering because they had the Roswell craft, they couldn't let that be known at any cost.

Found the encounter they based the first episode on - it was earlier and debunked during PROJECT SIGN.

The Gorman UFO dogfight was a widely publicized UFO incident. It occurred on October 1, 1948, in the skies over Fargo, North Dakota, and involved George F. Gorman, a pilot with the North Dakota Air National Guard. USAF Captain Edward J. Ruppelt wrote in his bestselling and influential The Report on Unidentified Flying Objects that the Gorman Dogfight was one of three "classic" UFO incidents in 1948 that "proved to [Air Force] intelligence specialists that UFOs were real."[1] However, in 1949 the US Air Force labeled the Gorman Dogfight as being caused by a lighted weather balloon...

What did you guys think? Interested to see where it will go...

Article today in New York Times by Leslie Kean and Ralph Blumental

Gives a very good sum up of Blue Book and the real machinations behind the scenes

Nice interview with the two sons.

They related how they had contacted the makers of the History Channel show and to their credit they asked them to be content advisors.
Aidan Gillen and Laura Mennell, who play the Hynek parents, aked them to be sure how they got their parents right.

And they seemed happy enough with the dramatization of the events, because they thought it would reach a broader audience.

They said there Dad's turning point was around the time of the Sorocco case
Afterwards they said he had to tread a fine line, to keep the USAF happy, he couldn't speak his mind completely, as he would have lost access to the data, and it would have threatened his academic career. On the other hand he was be pursued by people like James E. McDonald to blow the whistle on what he knew.

Hadn't heard he stood in front of the UN in 1977. Lee Speigel came on for a while and related a very interesting story about a chapter of the USAF 1968 handbook specifically on UFOs. He got from Hynek when he asked him if he had a smoking gun. Listed UFOs going back to 50,000 on earth.
Looked for this but couldn't find it.

Anyone know if there is a copy of this anywhere?

    Thanks for the synopsis Longeyes.
"going back to 50,000 on earth"?
    What, years?
I will dig thru my archives, see if I can turn up that USAF 1968 manual which contains a "chapter" on UFOs.
Any chance they shared the manual's name?
    Maybe Issac Koi can help.

Note: I did turn up a USAF "Reporting System" Manual (AFM 55-11).
It is from May 1968 and does include:
    C. THE FOLLOWING SPECIFIC SIGHTINGS WILL BE REPORTED
    (1) WHILE AIRBORNE AND FROM LANG BASED OBSERVERS.
    (A) HOSTILE OR UNIDENTIFIED SINGLE AIRCRAFT OR FORMATIONS OF AIRCRAFT WHICH APPEAR TO BE DIRECTED AGAINST THE UNITED STATES OR CANADA OR THEIR FORCES.
    (B) MISSILES.
    (C) UNIDENTIFIED FLYING OBJECTS.
    (D) HOSTILE OR UNIDENTIFIED SUBMARINES.
    (E) HOSTILE OR UNIDENTIFIED OR GROUPS OF MILITARY SURFACE VESSELS.
    (F) INDIVIDUAL SURFACE VESSELS, SUBMARINES, OR AIRCRAFT OF UNCONVENTIONAL DESIGN, OR ENGAGED IN SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY OR OBSERVED IN A LOCATION OR ON A COURSE WHICH MAY BE INTERPRETED AS CONSTITUTING A THREAT TO THE UNITED STATES, CANADA OR THEIR FORCES.
    (G) ANY UNEXPLAINED OR UNUSUAL ACTIVITY WHICH MAY INDICATE A POSSIBLE ATTACK AGAINST OR THROUGH CANADA OR THE UNITED STATES, INCLUDING THE PRESENCE OF ANY UNIDENTIFIED OR OTHER SUSPICIOUS GROUND PARTIES
They repeatedly mention CIRVIS reports, in the document.
