Far from it. A mystery isn't solved until we find out the "why". This press release only increases the mystery.

Eleven days ago, they closed the observatory and "moved people off the mountain". Where did the government house these people?

They also closed the local post office. That means they had to coordinate with the area's main post office (and a different branch of government) to stop the delivery of mail for all the people in Sunspot's zip code. Otherwise, there would be a large pile of mail outside the post office door.

That's a lot of work. And a lot of taxpayer's dollars.

Granted, there are still some missing pieces to the puzzle. But a few new clues are now apparent.

    1) There was a criminal investigation in the vicinity. It involved subjects suspected of criminal activity. Secrecy in place to avoid alerting them.

    2) The people were evacuated for their own safety because there was a (FBI stated) "credible threat", and the remote location makes it difficult to respond to an emergency in a timely fashion.

At this time we don't know WHAT type of emergency Law Enforcement foresaw.
Direct threat? Or just too close for comfort should a violent confrontation break out nearby?
Lots of possibilities, but all conjecture without more information.

This article from September 16 says that the observatory will go back to regular operations on Monday. Monday has come and gone. Does anyone know if it has reopened?

They still haven't said what the criminal activity was.

So now that the staff of that observatory are no longer under any threat, then why not be forth coming with:

    1) Was an arrest made.

    2) Was the criminal investigation unfounded.

    3) Who determined a threat in which the local sheriff would be closed out of the investigation.

. . . I could think of many more unanswered questions, but these would be a good start!

I agree. I think the arrest would be public but I haven't heard of one.

    a training exercise.

I would think that for the FBI in particular, to learn precisely how to respond to "crises" like these, is to learn how to react at a moments notice to "anywhere" enforce, in the USA. Thus, a target point "somewhere" in the nation is predetermined but unknown and then the trigger is pulled and let the cards fall and land under observation.

Everything so far...looks to be so impressive.

We now know what crime closed the observatory: child porn through their WiFi system.

Humm, that does explain the FBI's activity, and I have seen them in action on a raid like that on used car dealer who was doing the same thing on a neighbor's residential WiFi.

The poor folks living in that house had no clue. The FBI took every electronic communication device in the house of Mom, Dad, and three kids. In the end they tracked it down to the car lot across a State Road. (never made the news or the papers)

Not sure why the post office in New Mexico was involved . . .

I read the child porn report a few days ago. Was waiting for confirmation before posting anything.
In recent years here in California all the investigatons and arrests have been conducted by ICE with local LEO assistance.
Usually prosecuted by local District Attorney.
Not once in the past dozen cases or so was the FBI involved, every case had an ICE agent.
Cannot help but wonder why not ICE this time? Clearly part of their jurisdiction/mandate.

If child porn was a cover story we are back to; what the heck were they really looking for?

If I remember correctly, as a rule child pornography falls under the jurisdiction of the FBI, unless foreign nationals are involved, in which case it falls under ICE jurisdiction.
