Top Russian Admirals talk about UFOs

This is old news but I'm bringing it up here again because the thread was lost when Open Minds went down.
And I have since done a bit more digging and found a few extra background and details which I hope you will find interesting.

This is the article where I first came across the story this is not however the original source of the story.

Top Russian Admirals: UFOs Patrol Bermuda Triangle

    Tuesday, July 17, 2012 19:25

Former Russian Navy Chief Fleet Admiral Vladimir Chernavin described declassified encounters Russian sailors had with three types of UFOs: saucers, cylinders, and cigar-shaped craft. The admiral stressed the former Soviet Navy observed and gathered a large number of UFO sightings over the decades from various regions around the world.

Deputy Commander-in-Chief, Fleet Admiral Nikolai Smirnov concurred with Chernavin's assessment of the cases.

Weekly meetings about the encounters with otherworldly craft were documented by the former deputy section chief of exploration for the Oceanographic Commission of the USSR Academy of Sciences, Captain First Rank Vladimir Azhazha who launched a new career as a UFO investigator after his stint in the navy.

All the high-ranking, former naval officers stressed that roughly half of UFO encounters happen at sea. Statistically 60 percent occur in the Atlantic and Pacific, 10 percent in the Mediterranean, and the rest in other waters. Yet of all the encounters across the globe, some of the most amazing—and unsettling—incidents happened in the Bermuda Triangle…

Many men have seen them [UFOs] and have not been mistaken. Who are we to doubt their word? …Only a few weeks ago a Palermo policeman photographed one, and four Italian Navy officers saw a 300-foot long fiery craft rising from the sea and disappearing into the sky…Why should these men of law enforcement and defense lie? [Lord Rankeillour, Member of the House of Lords, Debate on Unidentified Flying Objects, Hansard (Lords), Vol. 397, No. 23, January 18, 1979.]

Six Russian submersibles encounter huge UFO

While on naval manuevers in the Pacific, six Russian submarines encountered mysterious echoes on their sonar. None of the sonar technicians in any of the boats could identify the signature of the echoes, nor could they determine just what the object was their instruments were reading.

All agreed, however, that the object was enormous and traveling beneath their submarines.

Despite the fact that the subs were under orders not to break formation or surface during the naval exercise, all six Russian submarines surfaced when the sonar operators confirmed the gigantic unknown had turned and was swiftly closing in on them.

The unidentified submerged object (USO) ascended rapidly and shot from the ocean. After surfacing it switched to atmospheric flight. According to the seamen's reports, the object quickly disappeared.

Navy Intelligence Captain First Rank, Igor Barclay, testifies

According to Captain Barclay, a seasoned intelligence officer, UFOs and USOs frequently appear during naval exercises undertaken by Russian, American and NATO fleets.

Many sightings and encounters occur in the region known as the Bermuda Triangle. Encounters with alien craft take place in the waters around the Bahamian islands, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico. Sometimes encounters also happen near the Eastern seaboard of the U.S.

Some of the Russian experts have told Barclay that they believe strong evidence exists the region contains one or more submerged UFO bases. Evidence of this, they say, can be seen by the numerous reports of USOs seen entering and leaving some of the Atlantic's deepwater areas in the southern part of Bermuda Triangle and greater Caribbean region.

The craft sometimes act hostile and make threatening manuevers. This has led some of the naval officers to speculate that whatever the intelligence is guiding the vessels, they do not like visitors.

The captain is also impressed by lake sightings of USOs. Like the oceans, some of the deeper lakes have frequent UFO activity with craft—usually saucer or cylinderical in shape—diving into, and later ascending from, the water.

Underwater the craft glow brightly and can be spotted even during daylight hours. Their light is "reminiscent of the spotlight and flash like the glitter of electric welding."

Barclay shared a tragic incident that ocurred in the summer of 1982.

During a diving training exercise held at the Siberian Lake Baikal, the largest freshwater lake in the world, several of the divers encountered strange beings at depth. Described as being only three-feet tall and wearing form-fitting sliver jumpsuits, the diving team were amazed to discover the humanoids wore no diving gear or scuba equipment. The strange beings, however, all wore odd-looking spherical helmets.

Attempting to confront the unidentified divers that were swimming in the restricted military training zone, the group of Russian divers swam after the helmeted beings.

Unfortunately, the attempt ended in disaster. Not only did the Russians fail to catch any of the fleeing humanoids, but four of the Russians were hurt in the attempt and three later perished.

Despite a massive search by the military, the strange beings were not seen again.

Fantastic sky cylinders soar over the Pacific

Captain Azhazha confirmed another of the declassified reports.

    Translated from Russian, he said:

"There is evidence from the Pacific Fleet sailors how in the remote waters of the Pacific, they observed 'hanging' in the sky cylinders, of which the flying saucer UFO smaller, plunged into the water, and then again back to the main cylinder, and he flew away."

The report is similar to many reports that have come from all over the world during the past 60 years.

Cylinders acting as "mother ships" operate as airborne carriers, the atmospheric version of naval aircraft carriers. Small craft—normally disc-shaped or spherical—use the skyborne carriers as their base of operations. What their missions are no one knows.

Azhazha believes the cylinders are linked to undersea bases that may populate the greater ocean depths at particular spots around the globe.

Famous researcher Ivan T. Sanderson explored this idea at length and had an exhaustive list of USO incidents featured in his classic book, Invisible Residents.
Many of the cases Sanderson researched at the time were culled from leaks in the Russian military. With the declassification of many of the Soviet navy USO encounters, Sanderson has been proven to be correct.

Night of the Bermuda Triangle terror

The Soviet navy became involved in an encounter withing the dread Bermuda Triangle that escalated into stark terror.

Highly respected and decorated Rear Admiral Yury Beketov, a former commander of one of the USSR's finest nuclear subs, often conducted wargame manuevers in the region of the Bermuda Triangle. Confronting unearthly phenomena more than once, he was under orders to pass such incidents immediately up the chain of command to his superior, Admiral Smirnov.

Testifying on an ocurrence during one night mission, Beketov described how critical systems aboard the submersible went haywire. Strange, unnatural phenomena and interference dogged their boat.

And then, shocked sonar operators tracked massive submersibles moving at incredible speeds in the distance and beneath their boat. Some were on collision courses veering off at the last moment.

Although many of the crew were frightened, they continued to attend to their duties. But no one knew if within the next minute, or the minute after that, their boat would be rammed.

According to the sonar readings—that were strictly confirmed—some of the alien vessels were traveling underwater at 400 miles per hour.

Beketov is sure the craft are operating with physical principles unknown to humans. As he rightly points out, 400 mph in the atmosphere is not too difficult to achieve, but underwater with the resistance and density, it is next to impossible and no technology known could attain even half that speed.

The rear admiral concludes that "beings who have created such material objects, greatly surpass us in development. You can even suggest that in the depths of the ocean along with us, there is another ancient civilization. Or is it aliens from other worlds, hidden from human eyes in deep water?"

Captain First Rank Vladimir Prikhodko related another remarkable discovery that's still been suppressed: two huge pyramids at the bottom of the ocean within the Bermuda Triangle.

Found by accident in 1991, Russian oceanographer Dr. Kvedvar Mendlik reported the pyramids were larger than those in Egypt and appeared to be constructed of thick glass or crystal.

Mendlik guesses they're no more than 50 years old. [See: Giant Crystal Pyramid Discovered In Bermuda Triangle]

But, if the technology is far advanced, the structures may be considerably older.

They may even be millions of years old.

A similar article did appear in the tech herald in 2009

The Russian navy is the latest to join the bandwagon of world official agencies anxious to declassify its encounters with Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs).

According to Svobodnaya Pressa news website, records of unexplained encounters by submarines and ships of the Russian navy have been revealed to the public for the very first time.

Vladimir Azhazha, former navy officer and a famous Russian UFO researcher, told Russia Today of a peculiar characteristic of UFOs, never before revealed to the general public - that they (UFOs) apparently enjoy water.

“Fifty percent of UFO encounters are connected with oceans. Fifteen more – with lakes. So UFOs tend to stick to the water,” he said to RT.

Following in a similar vein to recently-released NASA encounters with UFOs, the Russian records reveal an unexplained encounter a nuclear submarine had with six unknown objects underwater. After failing to get away from the UFOs, the captain allegedly gave the order to surface. The mysterious objects followed suit, then took off, according to the records.

Retired submarine commander Rear Admiral Yury Beketov was quoted by RT as saying many unexplained phenomena occured in the now-infamous Bermuda Triangle.

“On several occasions the instruments gave reading of material objects moving at incredible speed," he said. "Calculations showed speeds of about 230 knots, of 400 kph."

"Speeding so fast is a challenge even on the surface. But water resistance is much higher. It was like the objects defied the laws of physics. There’s only one explanation: the creatures who built them far surpass us in development,” Beketov said.

The released records also show large UFO activity around and in Russia’s Lake Baikal, the deepest fresh water body in the world.

RT again reports of one encounter in lurid detail: "In one case in 1982 a group of military divers training at Baikal spotted a group of humanoid creatures dressed in silvery suits. The encounter happened at a depth of 50 meters, and the divers tried to catch the strangers. Three of the seven men died, while four others were severely injured."

“I think about underwater bases and say: why not? Nothing should be discarded,” says Vladimir Azhazha. “Skepticism is the easiest way: believe nothing, do nothing. People rarely visit great depths. So it’s very important to analyze what they encounter there.”

And another in the Russian Times

Russian Navy UFO records say aliens love oceans

The Russian navy has declassified its records of encounters with unidentified objects technologically surpassing anything humanity ever built, reports Svobodnaya Pressa news website.

The records dating back to soviet times were compiled by a special navy group collecting reports of unexplained incidents delivered by submarines and military ships. The group was headed by deputy Navy commander Admiral Nikolay Smirnov, and the documents reveal numerous cases of possible UFO encounters, the website says.

Vladimir Azhazha, former navy officer and a famous Russian UFO researcher, says the materials are of great value.

“Fifty percent of UFO encounters are connected with oceans. Fifteen more – with lakes. So UFOs tend to stick to the water,” he said.

On one occasion a nuclear submarine, which was on a combat mission in the Pacific Ocean, detected six unknown objects. After the crew failed to leave behind their pursuers by maneuvering, the captain ordered to surface. The objects followed suit, took to the air, and flew away.

Many mysterious events happened in the region of Bermuda Triangle, recalls retired submarine commander Rear Admiral Yury Beketov. Instruments malfunctioned with no apparent reason or detected strong interference. The former navy officer says this could be deliberate disruption by UFOs.

“On several occasions the instruments gave reading of material objects moving at incredible speed. Calculations showed speeds of about 230 knots, of 400 kph. Speeding so fast is a challenge even on the surface. But water resistance is much higher. It was like the objects defied the laws of physics. There’s only one explanation: the creatures who built them far surpass us in development,” Beketov said.

Navy intelligence veteran, Captain 1st rank Igor Barklay comments:

“Ocean UFOs often show up wherever our or NATO’s fleets concentrate. Near Bahamas, Bermudas, Puerto Rico. They are most often seen in the deepest part of the Atlantic Ocean, in the southern part of the Bermuda Triangle, and also in the Caribbean Sea.”

Another place where people often report UFO encounters is Russia’s Lake Baikal, the deepest fresh water body in the world. Fishermen tell of powerful lights coming from the deep and objects flying up from the water.

In one case in 1982 a group of military divers training at Baikal spotted a group of humanoid creatures dressed in silvery suits. The encounter happened at a depth of 50 meters, and the divers tried to catch the strangers. Three of the seven men died, while four others were severely injured.

“I think about underwater bases and say: why not? Nothing should be discarded,” says Vladimir Azhazha. “Skepticism is the easiest way: believe nothing, do nothing. People rarely visit great depths. So it’s very important to analyze what they encounter there.”

Meanwhile Russian Navy officials have denied the collection of UFO-related encounters exists. A source in the Navy’s service staff said the story may have its roots in the reports of vessel commanders, which describe locating objects of unclear but Earthly origin.

“An illusion of a UFO encounter can result from large fish shoals, floating garbage or natural phenomena,” ITAR-TASS news agency cites the source.

But this is in fact the original source of an article in the russian press

    http://www.svpressa.ru/issue/news.php?id=11385

And this is a rough translation of the original article

The Navy has declassified information about meetings submarine of unknown objects in the deep sea and the mysterious underwater bases

Former Navy Commander Admiral Vladimir Chernavin told the "SP" that the Soviet Navy had accumulated a large number of sightings of unidentified flying objects (UFOs), pop out of the water and sinking into the depths of that special group was established collection and analysis of such facts. It once a week preparing a report on the subject of the Navy Commander. It was headed by deputy commander Admiral Nikolay Smirnov. Recently, these materials are declassified.

Describing the naval UFO information, the former deputy section chief of exploration Oceanographic Commission of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR Captain First Rank Vladimir Azhazha did this alignment:

    - 50 percent of UFO encounters are connected with oceans. 15 percent - with lakes. So UFOs tend explicitly to the water element. Therefore naval collection of data on UFOs is of special value.

There are statistics water UFO: first place for the meeting with the sailors is Atlantic - 44 percent of cases observed in the Pacific - 16 percent, 10 percent - in the Mediterranean, all the rest have 30 percent.

There is evidence that one of the Pacific Fleet submarines while on combat patrol, means sonar found next to a six unknown objects that defy classification. Maneuvering off the uninvited escort failed. The commander of the submarine was forced to command the ascent, grossly violated the rules of combat patrols. With all six boats afloat UFO crash carried out of the water and disappeared.

The former commander of a nuclear submarine, Rear Admiral Yury Beketov repeatedly participated in combat service in the Bermuda Triangle and repeatedly reported to Admiral Smirnov of unusual phenomena. Today, he says:

    - The output closer to the U.S. and moved to Bermuda. Unfolded. Went the opposite tack. Experienced many unusual phenomena: the instrument gave unmotivated failure, then a powerful noise. Some unexplained phenomena, apparently created artificially. We have repeatedly observed that the instruments record the movement of material objects with unimaginable speed. We measured some speed - is about 230 knots (400 kilometers per hour). This speed and on the surface it is difficult to establish, but in the air. But the powerful resistance of the water. If these objects are not the laws of physics. One conclusion: the creatures created by such material objects significantly exceed us in development. There are even in the depths of the ocean along with us, there is another ancient civilization. Or is it the aliens of other worlds, hiding from human eyes in deep water.

By the way, in the Bermuda Triangle is the deepest depression the Atlantic - Puerto Rican. Its depth is 8742 meters. Perhaps there are hidden UFO bases, rather, NGOs - unidentified underwater objects.

Veteran Intelligence Navy Captain First Rank Igor Barclay says:

    - Ocean UFOs often appear in areas of concentration of our forces or the NATO fleet. This is the Bahamas and Bermuda, Puerto Rico, the U.S. East Coast waters. It was there, according to some experts, are underwater UFO base. Very often they see a UFO in the deepwater area of the Atlantic - in the south of the Bermuda Triangle and the Caribbean. And they behave not as guests.

Very impressive data on UFO sightings in the lake. At kilometer depths of the lake sailors repeatedly observed glow reminiscent of the spotlight like the sparkle and flash welding, as well as departures from the water obscure objects as bright shining silver discs and cylinders.

In the summer of 1982 divers diving military service during the training dives into the water of Lake Baikal several times almost experienced divers in tight silver suits their body, in all similar to humans, only about three meters of growth. Moreover, at a depth of 50 meters, they had no diving equipment, or any other devices, but their heads are concealed spherical helmets. An attempt to catch the unidentified divers ended tragically. Of the group of divers in seven people who tried to do it with the grid, four became disabled, and three died.

According to the navy, UFOs come in different forms: saucers, cigars, cylinders.

    - There is evidence of the Pacific Fleet sailors - continues Vladimir Azhazha - how in the remote waters of the Pacific Ocean, they observed "hanging" in the sky cylinders, of which flew smaller saucer UFO, immersed in water, and then again returned to the main cylinder, and it flew off somewhere. According to our Earthling, this cylinder can be identified with the uterus. About underwater bases can say one thing: why not? Nothing can throw. It is easiest to take a skeptical stance: neither believe in nothing and do nothing. People rarely sink to great depths. It is therefore very important to analyze that with which they're found.

Comment Chairwoman research organization "Underwater Search" Captain First Rank Vladimir Prikhodko:

    - The data of our sailors are supported by many foreign certificates. For example, the U.S. military press reported the Unexplained contact off the coast of Puerto Rico. USN spent teaching here, the purpose of which was the discovery of the submarine breaks through the "enemy." The exercise involved the aircraft carrier, five escort ships, submarines and aircraft. All submarines involved in teaching, maneuvered in the "silent stroke". "All of a sudden there was something exceptional - said Professor Sanderson, who made a report based on the analysis of documents, U.S. Navy. - Technician hydrophone at one of escorts sent to the bridge that is one of the submarine broke the system and, obviously, was to pursue what- the unknown target. "

Acoustics report put officers in a deadlock. The fact that the unidentified object, measuring device, went under the water at a speed of 150 knots! That is - 280 km / h! This can not be, because the modern submarine submerged can reach speeds above 45 knots. Watch officer immediately reported it to the captain, who, in turn, immediately contacted a command ship. Imagine his surprise when he learned that, just interrupting each other, all the other ships to report to the same carrier. "At least, - says Professor Sanderson - 13 logbooks submarines and aircraft logbook were records that have marked their gidroakkustiki" ultrabystrohodny submarine. " The relevant reports of all this were immediately sent Commander Atlantic Fleet, U.S. Navy.

...Four days object maneuvered within a large area, and four days the ships and aircraft of the U.S. Navy took its signals are watching him. (Or, on the contrary, he watched them!) H and that's not all. According to the reports gidroakkustikov, this object is immersed to a depth of 20,000 feet in a matter of minutes. In other words, he maneuvered in the vertical and horizontal planes, as it can not do any modern underwater vessel built by man. Not to mention the fact that the ultimate immersion in modern submarine does not exceed 6,000 feet. Even the bathyscaphe "Trieste", built for the ultra-deepwater dives, where the famous oceanographer Jacques Piccard in 1960, made a record dive to the Mariana Trench at a depth of about 35.800 feet, so as not to be destroyed, at a cost of 4.5 hours immersion. And this almost unknown object maneuvered from the surface to a depth of 20,000 feet in a matter of minutes! "In other words - says Sanderson - the mysterious object must literally belong to another world."

Witnessed another unusual case was a famous Arctic explorer Dr. Rubens Dzh.Villela and watch officer and helmsman icebreaker was taking part in naval maneuvers code-named "Deep Freeze" in the North Atlantic. The case was in the evening. Dr. Villela was on deck when suddenly saw "something came out of the water, breaking a three-meter thick ice, and a huge silver bullet disappeared in the sky." Huge blocks of ice, up in the air for a few tens of meters from the cannon thunder struck back on hummocks, and the water in the hole to form a vast seething. She rose from the clouds of steam that seems to point to the huge energy potential of the process that has just happened.

In the 70 years the American Navy conducted tests of the long-range underwater communications. In the Atlantic, the ship that took the emitted signals from the coast. And then they started taking the signals similar to the mail, but modified. The analysis has shown that this is not an echo, not a repetition of the original signal. Located the source. He was at a depth of 8 kilometers. According to American scientists, it looked like someone took a signal, modify it, and then transmitted on the same frequency as if to draw attention to himself.

In years to decipher the signal failed. Recently, an attempt was repeated with the help of powerful computers Pentagon. The results are not reported. But Americans have increased markedly after research on the seabed in the area from which a "reflection" of the signals.

In the early 90's of the last century during the test bed in the Bermuda Triangle, the center at a depth of 600 meters were discovered two gigantic pyramids, exceeding the size of Egypt. This was back in 1991, told a news conference the expedition leader, oceanographer Dr. Kvedvar Mendlik. In his view, the pyramids were built only 50 years ago. The technology is not clear. The material is like a very thick glass.

In 1997, in the valley Belingsgauzena priantarkticheskoy area surveyed avtraliyskie sailors. At a depth of 6 km bathyscaphe camera captured oval education, radiating intense inner light. The film explored the scientists of the Royal Institute of Oceanology. The conclusion was clear: these buildings can only be man-made.

These facts are led to a conclusion that the depths of the ocean as well unexplored and mysterious as the cosmos. Only humanity somehow with great interest rushes up than down. Maybe it's a big mistake

Anyway since 2009 this story has intriged me.

I went as far as joining Sharkhunters

    http://www.sharkhunters.com/
A group started up by US submariners of which Chernarvin was a member, I'm not sure if he still is but someone at Sharkhunters did get a reply from some of the old russian submariners confirming that off the coast of Puerto Rico in the Trench off coast was well known for strange encounters.

This last year I bought 'Invisible Residents' by Ivan Sanderson written in the sixties -don't bother it's mostly ramblings there are some true accounts in there but very few and he makes vast assumptions based and the fleetest of information. Ludicrious and a waste of money.
