A dead and mutilated cow discovered last week in a Santa Clara Pueblo field reminded several Rio Arribans of similar mysterious dead cows found both nationwide and in the County during the late 1970s, eventually prompting a federal investigation into the eerie phenomenon.

Santa Clara tribal member Patrick Tafoya said March 22 that he discovered one of his bulls dead and mutilated in a field earlier that morning. Tafoya said he last saw the cow alive and well the night before. The bull was dead the next morning when he checked on it and it looked like someone had removed its eyes, cut off its genitals and “cut up” its anus, Tafoya said.

Flies buzzed around the dead bull as it lay on its side at the edge of a field west of Indian Service Route 614 later that afternoon. The animal’s eyes and genitals had been removed. It was unclear if the anus was also mutilated and there did not appear to be any blood at the scene.

Santa Clara Lt. Gov. Bruce Tafoya and Santa Clara Tribal Police at the site would not permit a reporter to take photographs or interview tribal members without permission from tribal Gov. Walter Dasheno. Dasheno did not give permission and has not returned subsequent messages left at his office."
