In 2008 studies and research was being performed at the University of Chicago by Professor Wakely, Assistant Professor of Physics, concerning radiation flashes in which he is researching FTL particles in search of the origins of Cosmic Rays that bombard our earth with tens of thousands of particles per second.

To further the research of Cosmic rays origins more current research is being conducted at the University of Wisconsin.

The evolution of this research seems to suggest that particles or flashes of radiation particles can travel FTL theoretically in a vacuum.
Next step of course should be space ships travelling FTL in a vacuum or force field of some sort.
FTL spaceflight seems to be in reach in the not too distant future.

That's what a team of physicists led by Juan Yin at the University of Science and Technology of China in Shanghai found in an experiment involving entangled photons, or photons that remain intimately connected, even when separated by vast distances.They wanted to see what would happen if you tried assigning a speed to what Einstein called "spooky action at a distance."
They didn't find anything unexpected, but that wasn't the point: in physics, sometimes it's good to be sure. The group published their work on the ArXiv.org, a preprint server for physics papers.

But when you consider that the distance between our sun and our closest stellar neighbor, Alpha Centauri A (ACa), is nearly 38 trillion kilometers, Voyager’s blistering pace is more akin to a crawl. If Voyager 1 were to continue at its current pace it would take about 75 millennia to get to ACa. Now that astronomers are beginning to find extra-solar planetary systems NASA is looking into advanced propulsion techniques to “enable human exploration of the solar system over the next 50 years, and… interstellar spaceflight by the end of the century.”

Teleportation is being studied throughout the world at major universities with success in the sub atomic world; it is no longer science fiction. Post #15 in this thread also touches upon this concept.
There was a myth that pre WW2 one of our major American companies was doing research in secret concerning teleportation and was able to transport fish from one fish tank to another but abandon their research because at that time they could think of no practical application for it to be utilized for any money making venture. I think the time frame of this urban legend was around the 1930’s.
If teleportation the way it is presented, could be exploited into a propulsion system or something similar to propulsion than distance would no longer be a problem in travelling the vast expanses in the known universe in real time.
