Well, you stated that very well. No disagreement from me.

Sorry for the delay in responding to your question Doc I will try and reduce my opinion to a simple sentence with a follow-up link worth a read.

Tomi0uk: Thanks so much for the kind words! I write some of these things for the obvious reasons i.e, to put some film or idea before a bigger audience. However, sometimes I am writing because if I don't write, I'll be talking about it around the house and driving, er, entertaining my family (who swear I'm not boring them! Good sports!).

There is another moment in the Balcony Scene I forgot to mention. At one point, in the pool, Romeo swears his love by the Moon. Juliet replies, first disputing the logic of swearing by the moon, then stating her own love for Romeo in definite terms, which she has not done up until this point. Paraphrased, she says: Don't swear by the moon, it changes all the time. If you are going to swear, swear by yourself, for you are the god in my religion.

Your review is probably as good as the movie. I loved reading it and it makes me take a wiser view of the significance of that play and also want to see this version of it.

You give more than just a review here, but add validity to this play in our modern age.

    Thank you! ..

What I have been noticing is a behavioral shift; especially among the young as an attitude of ‘entitlement’ which I am not alone in my observations as most of my colleagues have noticed the same thing as you are becoming aware Doc.

At first you might take them as being a little slow in the brain department or mentally impaired in some way but most are totally out of touch with the reality and empathy of others and many are well educated but completely egocentric and literally not drawing any connection with social interaction or in touch with how to react to feelings of others. Even when brought to their attention nothing jives with them.
My observations were coming from the mental health field also. I was trying to protect the anonymity of the people I was referring to by not mentioning the origin, just a courtesy. They would use almost the same wording as your first paragraph. They think it comes from general social change in the world and from parenting. Do you have a theory as to the origins of this phenomenon?

I just thought of Joe Walsh's 'industrial love song' - Life's Been Good To Me So Far :

"It's hard to handle this fortune and fame
    Everybody's so different, I haven't changed..."

Do you see the World changing? Yes...

Are people becoming less involved with each other? The type of involvement is different. People are more stressed. More than in decades past. More people are causing personal problems that could have been avoided. I encounter more people who are self-centered.

Are people more rude? Without a doubt, yes.

Do you find you make what you think are new friendships only to find that your messages go unanswered for days or longer? If they owe me money, yes.

Some of these factors are playing a role:

Good paying jobs have vanished, and employers are not loyal to their long term employees. Comments often left at ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN and so-on: Show people are out of touch with the vast majority of others. Many jobs are now outsourced, with factories subcontracting half or more of their labor force to avoid taxes, healthcare and workman's comp insurance. Many companies have placed a middleman taking a cut between them and employees.

No matter which way Middle-America turns, Corporations and big business are squeezing every drop of money from consumers. Voters are disenfranchised and believe, criminal conduct between corporations and politics is at an all time high. People feel powerless to do anything about it. Following corporate lead, many feel it is every man for him-herself.

I could continue at great length but will halt myself.

Every so often Miss August reaches out her soft white hand to me and smiles, saying, "What is that I am supposed to say? 'Poor thing? You poor, poor thing.'" It makes me feel very good when she does that. Must be magic.

Thank you very much! I worry that I bore my friends to tears with some of these interests of mine. Dr.Who is a permanent part of my life. I'd be happy if someone else finds an interest and some enjoyment out of it, too. I met someone today who mentioned Netflix and watching old series, including Dr. Who. We were debating our favorite recent Drs and having a great time within minutes. Good times!

Having never watched it before even once, I now know that I would probably like to.
Good piece of writing on Dr Who and really helps to understand the popularity it still has.

I'll be interested to read what you think of them.

I have a vague memory of watching the 2002 version. It’s at the local library, will have to pick it up.

That's why I left out any spoilers. I hope you get to see them soon. If there was a choice I would wish you could see Tarkovsky's version first but, no matter, nothing will be lost by seeing the Soderbergh version first. I look forward to reading your reaction when you've seen it.
