    The hardened and uplifted layer of ash is at the lower right. Camel footprints are underneath the ash layer.

    A clear camel track is at the upper right. The gouged out areas in the middle and lower left are where someone removed tracks illegally. This is why archeologists, paleontologists and anthropologists don't give out exact locations for publication outside professional journals.

  3. Rainbow Basin Camel Tracks

    This is a camel track fossilized in Miocene lakeshore mud, around 13,000,000 years old.

    Camel tracks are found in the Rainbow Basin area. Early camels lived in North America in the Miocene then became extinct here. This area has been the source of many of the fossil samples of Miocene animals and plants on the continent.
    Pressure along fault lines has uplifted and exposed older levels beneath today's surface topsoil.

  4. Rainbow Basin 2

    This is another view of the Rainbow Basin Syncline. The hills to the left and the right are uplifted ancient lake bed mud. This is the beginning of the fossil bed area that has been extensively excavated by museums, colleges and universities, usually in cooperation with the County Museum. These hills are tan but many of the fossil bearing hills are green mud. The fossils wash down out of the hills into the flat land and ravines below, so you can walk along and see fossils here and there if you know ...

  5. Rainbow Basin and Looking for the Lost Hillside

    We like to go out in the Mojave Desert and look for things. Me, Miss August and the Tomb Raider. We have looked for obvious things like gold and silver. We have also looked for less obvious things like vanished towns, lost mines, minerals and gemstones. We have spent a lot of time looking for fossils and artifacts and even archeology sites that no one has visited for 50 years or more.

    This Spring we are looking for a mineral site we found a long time ago and we can't exactly remember ...
