I have often wondered about the spiritual interpretation of temple as well. The lord departed the first temple in Ezekiel 10 before it was destroyed so it makes sense that he would depart this one as well. Now there is no need for a temple. The Temple was for sacrifice and the presence of God. There is no longer a need for sacrifice, and the presence of God has come in the Holy Spirit.
There is an interesting parallel to the abomination of desolation standing in the temple and the mark of the beast and Ezekiel 13. In that chapter people wore bands around their wrists and forehead that, depending on how you translate it, held the spirits of the dead, or possibly the specific spirits of the Rephaim. It may be something like a restrained cohabitation. It also seems to be very similar to the spirit working that goes on in modern abductions regarding having ones body cloned and an alien spirit put into it.
